The French have a reputation, deserved or not, for being less than friendly to foreigners who visit their lovely country. According to a recent poll, the French also have a reputation as being some of the worst tourists in the world. Conversely, my compatriots are big spenders and tippers (no surprise there). However I do wonder about Americans being listed as worst dressed when the Britons are amongst the best dressed tourists. The French are rude everywhere

I could name many locations in the U.S. where I have been treated rudely - whereas in Paris after a whole week of happily bumbling around, there was only one incident where someone was rude - and he was an Italian vendor in the park at the E.T..
We were treated politely and on occasion made very welcomed, in restaurants and small businesses. Very good for a large city in any country.
As for dress - we found we could figure out what country the tourists were from (hmm, should I list this? oh well, why not...); the Germans and Scandinavians were the ones wearing shorts & ready to hike the Alps; the Italians were dressed for going to church; the Aussies were dressed for the Outback and looked like they had already been hiking there (we were really worried about one of the gents as his face was beet red).
The bad American dress (& hygiene) was on the teenagers - the adults looked pretty good for Yanks....
I think those descriptions are pretty accurate, at least from what I've seen around Paris :)
I live in the US and Imust say that here people are more pleasant than in France (generally speaking)
